Attention: It is illegal to send and receive meat products through international mail

Recently, there have been many reports of meat products including ham and sausages being found in international parcels in Japan.

Importing meat products into Japan by international mail is prohibited in order to avoid brining in diseases carried by animals (e.g. foot-and-mouth disease, or bird flu) from overseas.

Please be aware that if you receive meat products from overseas without an inspection conducted by the Animal Quarantine Service, you could be punished with imprisonment for up to 3 years or a fine of up to 3 million yen.

Tell your acquaintances, relatives, and friends living abroad not to send you any meat products.

When receiving a parcel from overseas, check to make sure if there are any meat products in it. If you find such products, you must report it to your nearest Animal Quarantine Service immediately.
