National Census 2020: Deadline extended to Oct. 20 (10/9/2020)
Have you completed your census response?
The deadline for responses has been extended from October 7 to October 20, 2020.
A census worker will visit each household that has not responded to the census yet.
Your cooperation will be appreciated.
The National Census is carried out in Japan once every 5 years to learn about the current state of the population and each household. It is the most important statistical survey. Regardless of nationality, you must respond if you meet the following:
- On October 1, 2020, you had lived in Japan for at least three months.
- On October 1, 2020, you had plans to live in Japan for more than three months.
At some point since September 14, a census worker carrying an ID card has visited your household and given you census survey documents.
You can respond online until Tuesday, October 20. You can do this in Japanese, English, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish and Portuguese.
You also can fill in the census on paper. You can submit this by post or directly to the census worker by Tuesday, October 20.

Watch out for scams!
Be wary of suspicious visits, phone calls or emails from people pretending to be census workers. The census does not involve any requests for money or possessions at all. It also does not involve any questions about your bank balance, salary, etc.
