The National Census is carried out in Japan once every 5 years to learn about the current state of the population and each household. It is the most important statistical survey. It covers everyone that, as of October 1, 2020, will have lived in Japan for at least three months, or will plans to live in Japan for more than three months, regardless of nationality.

From September 14, a census worker with an ID card will visit your household and give you census survey documents.

You can respond online until Wednesday October 7. You can do this in Japanese, English, Chinese (Simplified, Traditional), Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish and Portuguese.

You also can fill in the census on paper. You can submit this by post or directly to the census worker from Thursday, October 1 to Wednesday, October 7.
